Reinier A.C. van der Veen followed both his bachelor and master at Delft University of Technology, at the department of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM). He obtained the Master of Science (MSc) degree in Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management (SEPAM) in October 2007. His master thesis was about the design of the Dutch balancing market for a power system with an increasing share of domestic distributed generation. In February 2008, he started as a PhD researcher at the Energy and Industry (E&I) section of the department TPM.
The main topic of his PhD research is the design of and decision-making on multinational balancing markets. The research is part of an internation research project, called "International Balance management in multinational power markets". Partners in this project are TenneT, Statnett, SINTEF Energy Research, TU Delft (TBM), and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), department Electrical Power Engineering.
Also cooperated on the conference paper "Effect of Integrating Regulating Power Markets of Northern Europe on Total Balancing Costs" for the 2009 IEEE Bucharest Power Tech Conference.
